About Parent Support Working Group The Parent Support Working group is designed to engage parents, grandparents and caregivers/family members of all kinds in supporting the youth-led intergenerational climate actions on 9/20/2019. This working group is dedicated to expanding parental engagement and ensuring support for youth leadership. We will provide tools and resources for families to understand and learn from in order to lead in climate organizing, the strike and related actions. A critical component of this working group is building cross-race, cross-class support for September 20th and future climate organizing, including elevating the voice of youth in frontline impact environmental justice communities and understanding the race and immigration impacts of strikes.

I so feel you Vanessa, African parents don't like to face up to problem. just shove everything under the carpet. We also have this fear of speaking u against the Elders not only parents but also political leaders are seen as elders. In certain countries, you even get intimidated by intelligence because of your personal opinions...

I have a letter that I wrote to my kids' school - and their response was great: go, take videos, and let the kids come back and share the expereince in the classrooms. (1st and 3rd gr) Happy to share the letter...
Joanna Kobylivker
01:16:41
Idea if a strike if too difficult: have the kids all wear blue on Sept 20 and 27 and discuss during morning announcements, lunch time, in classrooms, etc.

Question: How do young people handle resistance from teachers and administrators when striking from school?
Jane Gillette
01:21:19
We have been taking our kid to protests since she was a baby. We practice chants. She usually rides on one of us, though now that she’s big (3.5yr) she’ll be on her own two feet. We tend to hang around the outside of the gathering so we can wander to see all parts of the protest.
Jessica Miller
01:21:44
Oh, a parents meeting sounds great! Would you share the agenda/topics you’re covering for those of us that might want to do the same?

I wrote to over 100 schools in Windhoek and only 3 have responded. so the ignorance is mind bluffing I find. No government school has responded so
Jessica Haller
01:27:23
how do you talk to the people who dont want to hear it?
Jessica Haller
01:27:31
the other parents who should care but dont?
Jane Gillette
01:28:48
Find the values you share. You share the value of your children. You share the value of protecting people and places from harm.
Questions? Jill Kubit
01:29:16
There are some great resources out there about how to best have climate conversations- Climate Outreach, UK and climate communications. Best to talk about what you care about and figure out what matters to the person you are talking to.
INA Shikongo
01:29:22
One of the schools is for the visually impaired and the other two are German schools... so starting a parent club is a bit scary for me at the moment but if I would then I would start with the school where my children are. Waldorf is also called the tree huggers school but at least one does not feel alone.
Questions? Jill Kubit
01:29:45
totally agree with you Jane! Values are super important
Questions? Jill Kubit
01:30:44
Great idea Claudia!
INA Shikongo
01:31:18
But thank you for the tips and If I was to do anything differently now, it would be to start a parent club but from different schools still in my friendship circle because when I look at my experience, Waldorf is the most active school but also because of the direct connection with me and my children... Thank you
JENNIFER SCARLOTT
01:31:30
Just a thought, that in some school settings, or community settings, perhaps students themselves could organize events at which they educate their parents and ask for their parents’ involvement… so, youth to parent, in addition to parent to parent.
Lisa Bergmann
01:31:36
Jessica Haller could you please share your letter? I sent one, too, and have heard NOTHING back yet :(
Morris Andati
01:32:00
From all these I see the importance of having trainings in these schools on matters to do with climate change. This can reduce the ignorance.
Jane Gillette
01:32:07
Also, honestly - just talk about it like it’s a normal thing to talk about. If you wait for climate change to come up naturally - it won’t. But it also doesn’t have to be a Big Conversation. The majority of Americans are concerned about climate change but think no one around them is also concerned. Just talk about it.
